Historical novel set during '13 mine disaster nears completion by Nick Pappas
The Waiting Shadows, author Tamara Eaton's historical novel set in Dawson during the mine disaster of 1913, is approaching the finish line.
Tamara reached out to me a few months ago to introduce herself and to ask if I would be willing to read her manuscript with an eye toward historical accuracy. I was more than happy to oblige.
Here is how Tamara describes the book: "When a coal mine explodes in 1913 New Mexico, a boss's wife breaks social norms, inviting a laundress and Italian immigrant to await news. Shared secrets and fears unite the strangers, but the new dawn might not bring an end to their darkness."
Why Dawson?
Tamara, who once lived in nearby Raton, told me she settled on Dawson as the setting because it provided the perfect backdrop for the story she wanted to tell: women of diverse backgrounds coming together, under the worst of circumstances, only to find they are not so different after all.
"I could imagine the women’s fear and hope for their loved ones while the rescue efforts were underway during the mine disaster of 1913," she explained in an email. "It seemed natural that they would bond during such an intense time while waiting for news. Thus was born the idea of The Waiting Shadows."
Tamara is in the process of querying agents in search of a publisher. If that doesn't pan out, she said, she plans to self-publish.
The Waiting Shadows is Tamara's second novel. Weeping Women Springs, set in the fictional American town of Hope Springs during World War II, debuted in 2015.
I'll let you know when her new book is available.
